The piece I'm proudest of. Thirty-two chess pieces, each hand-cast from original sculpts of our native birds, facing off across a walnut board inlaid with pāua shell. Months of design and casting go into every set. The King is the Kārearea (NZ Falcon), the Queen the Kiwi, the pawns a row of Fantails.

A genuine heirloom, and no two sets are quite alike.

• Board: 455 × 455mm overall, 400 × 400mm playing area, 50 × 50mm squares, 20.5mm thick
• King height 95mm (tournament scale)
• 32 pieces hand-cast in platinum silicone moulds from original sculpted masters
  • Ivory side: white-pigmented epoxy resin with a burnt umber antiquing wash
  • Jade side: translucent green resin
• Board: solid American Walnut border with pāua shell inlay, around a burl maple and walnut veneer playing surface
• Piece lineup: King Kārearea (Falcon), Queen Kiwi, Bishop Kea, Knight Tūī, Rook Takahē, Pawn Fantail (Pīwakawaka)
